I’m not really sure why it took me so long to get round to putting these up. I’ve already put a small number on Flickr, but this is the full set of photos from a visit to the Lake District, unquestionably my favourite part of England, in April. Included is a pic of me which I’ve put in for posterity — you’ll see why when you look at it.

Hjaltalín at The Slaughtered Lamb

The Slaughtered Lamb in Clerkenwell is a very small, intimate venue where Hjaltalín, one of the most popular homegrown bands in Iceland, played a set at the start of their European tour. I went along to take some pictures, and also to enjoy what was a very well received and very entertaining performance. You can read my review at The 405.

I went to Highgate Cemetery with a group of friends yesterday. I’d not been before, despite having lived in London for about 17 years, so was pleasantly surprised by the amazing atmosphere and range of beautiful statues, and the ivy growing over everything. Here is a selection of the angels and other statues overlooking the departed.

The secret railway

Very near to where I live is a disused branch line that was closed down about 10 years ago. It’s still possible to walk along the tracks of this old railway and see how quickly nature is taking over where man used to hold sway. Here’s a set of photos I took during a walk there this afternoon.

Cornwall is England’s most westerly county, and St Just its most westerly mainland town. This year my family and I visited the historical tin and copper mining area around St Just with some friends, and spent time exploring some of the astonishing coastline with its wild open moorland, fertile valleys and abandoned mining buildings. And, of course, that sea.

Bath and Bristol

I spent the weekend just gone in Bath with the family, where I also met a couple of friends who wanted to take some photos of this beautiful World Heritage listed city in the south west of England. On the Saturday evening we went into Bristol to visit Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge which spans the Avon Gorge at the western end of the city. Here are a few pictures from the weekend.
